The Technology: How does home IPL hair removal work?
IPL light is absorbed in the melanin (pigment) of the skin and it is directed as thermal energy to the follicles, damaging the matrix cells responsible for hair production. Follicles are permanently damaged by thermal energy and are not able to produce hair anymore. After the treatment follicles shrink and shed the hair after 7-10 days. This means your hair won’t fall out immediately after the treatment, but after 7-10 days.
Treatment is effective when the skin is light and the hair is dark, as it is the pigments of the hair that absorb light. If the skin is darker, it’ll, too, absorb light, leaving less energy for the hair. If you sunbathe, the treatments will be less effective. You’ll have to go just one summer with less sunbathing, after that you can knock yourself out :)
The hair strands must be in the follicles, since that’s how the light can reach the follicle and the matrix cells – during the course of treatments, only use hair removal methods that do not remove the hair strands. For example razors, depilatory creams, hair removal scrubs, etc. Do not remove the strands with a tweezer after the treatment saying they are already damaged. Hair must fall out on its own.
